Teaching Experience

Dr. Ovrebo's teaching experience began at the junior and senior high levels. He has held two positions in the public schools including a small school in North Dakota where he taught all of the science courses in grades 7-12. His university teaching experience is in botany and microbiology. Courses he currently teaches include Introductory Microbiology, Plant Biology, Plant Kingdom, Mycology, Biological and Medical Terminology, General Biology for non-majors and Tropical Biology. He has taught Field Botany and Mycology at the University of Oklahoma Biological Station. He has also taught at Western Washington University and Rose State College (OK). Whenever possible, he attempts to weave aspects of tropical biology into his classes.

Research Interests

Research is important and rewarding part of Dr. Ovrebo's academic life. His interest is in the taxonomy and ecology of the higher fleshy fungi, mainly the mushroom-type fungi. His dissertation research was on the genus Tricholoma of the Great Lakes Region. He continues his work on the genus in both tropical and temperate regions. Another of his projects is to document the mushroom-type fungi that occur in Oklahoma. His first experience in the tropics took place in the Venezuelan llanos. Although the llanos is a wet environment, fungi were abundant in the gallery forests and other high areas that did not flood. He continued his tropical work in the lowland rain forests of Costa Rica where he has collected extensively at La Selva Biological Station. In recent years, Dr. Ovrebo has collected on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, and in the fall of 2002, collected in Belize. His work on BCI has yielded some interesting finds. He has also collected in the oak forests of Colombia.
