Research Interests

My main interests are Ethnobotany, Systematics, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology. I am interested in the study of neotropical biodiversity, specially in tropical rain forests where I have experience on tropical trees, cycads and Myxomycetes. I have experience in the use of ethnobotany, morphology and molecular biology as my main sources of data to describe and reconstruct patterns of variation in plants and Myxomycetes, to propose phylogenetic hypotheses and relate this information with geographical distribution and human interactions. I have experience conducting fieldwork especially in Mesoamerica where I have had the opportunity to work with several different cultural groups, among them are; Totonacs (Veracruz), Chinantecs, Mixtecs, Zapotecs (Veracruz and Oaxaca), Chontals (Tabasco) Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Tojolabal, Lacandon (Chiapas, Campeche and Quintana Roo), Maya from the Yucatan peninsula and Mestizos. More recently I started to work with the Quechua and Huaoranis in Ecuador. In Systematics, I have been involved in the theory of Systematics, phylogenetics, taxonomy and computerized tools for access and retrieval of biological information. In theoretical Systematics I have explored the ontological and epistemological implications of the use of classifications in ecological studies of biodiversity and the use of phylogenies in designing strategies for conservation biology. I am also interested in the study of species concepts, especially in regard to the dichotomy between unpractical but theoretically coherent concepts versus practical but theoretically unsustainable concepts.
