Teaching Experience

Dr. Patricia McDaniel received her doctorate in biology from St. Louis University. She currently teaches conservation biology lecture and laboratories, ecology lecture and animal behavior laboratories at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. For the past seven years Dr. McDaniel has developed and taught field courses in tropical ecology, conservation, rainforest ecology, primate ecology and behavior and primate conservation in Costa Rica, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Panama. She specializes in conservation program development, recently returning from Venezuela where she developed a conservation education program for grade school students. She recently received a grant from US Fish and Wildlife Service to develop, coordinate, and team-teach a training program in field methods in conservation and tropical ecology for Latin American professionals.

Research Interests

Dr. McDaniel has lived in Costa Rica and Venezuela where her research interests have focused on the ecology and conservation of endangered primate species. Past projects have included seasonal comparisons in the habitat use and activity patterns of spider monkeys, capuchins and howler monkeys in disturbed habitats. In her previous position as Coordinator of Latin American Conservation Programs for Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Dr. McDaniel was involved in various aspects of the Orinoco crocodile recovery program, Andean condor reintroduction and spectacled bear conservation education. Previous research on captive animals has included social behavior studies of lowland gorillas and ruffed lemurs, and studies of reproductive success in Chilean flamingos.
