Teaching Experience

Dr. DeWreede has taught courses in Marine Ecology, Marine Science, Biology, and Botany.

Research Interests

My research has dealt with both theoretical and practical aspects of the ecology of marine macro-algae, in both temperate and tropical habitats. In Hawaii I studied the ecology and taxonomy of Sargassum, and helped in establishing pilot farms for Eucheuma (a red seaweed and carrageenan producer) in the Philippines and the Confederated States of Micronesia. Under the direction of Dr. M.S. Doty these farms have become a highly successful enterprise in the Philippines.

In British Columbia, my research is on the structure and demography of marine algal populations, and of the biomechanical properties of selected species; along with graduate students, this work has focused on populations of subtidal kelps, Fucus, and various red algae. These algae have been studied for their competitive interactions, susceptibility to herbivores, and their biomechanical properties. This research has produced both mathematical and conceptual models.

Recent graduate students have studied topics such as: Life History and Molecular Studies of the Acrosiphonia/Codiolum/ Chlorochytrium Complex; Biomechanical Studies of Mazzaella (Iridaea), and of Kelp holdfasts; Matrix Models and Algal Life Histories; Cellular Automota Models of High Intertidal Algal Communities; and Ecological Habitat Selection of Haploid and Diploid Phases of "Isomorphic" Red Algae.
